Heifer
Freshman Year our class went to Heifer International near Little Rock, Arkansas. There we simulated living in a third world country. When we first got there I was really nervous because I didn't know what to expect. but they split us up into three groups, and we started with team building games. later on we had our last meal before starting the simulation. then we found out who out "family" were, I got the wood slums. when i first found out i was in the wood slums i was nervous because nobody wanted to be in the slums. so then we went to our home for the next 48 hours, and because the wood slums had two houses we split up the group amongst the two. then we began coming up with a plan for dinner. the only things we were given to cook were pots and pans, bowls, silverware, and rice. We had to trade to get other food like carrots, oil, cooking water, onions, and potatoes. Our group as well as others became a bit desperate and began to steal food from other families. after we prepared our food to cook and got the fire started, which took the longest the first night, we cooked our food last out of all the slums. that night after eating dinner a lot of people went to Thailand where they were singing songs and talking around the campfire, but then it was time to go to bed. that night i step on the hard wood floor of our little "cabin". the next morning the slums had to make breakfast for everyone in the camp, we had grits. Then after eating breakfast we met up at the barn where we were ginning chores. my group had to wash all the dishes from breakfast, and then we learned how to make a brick, and that some people have to do the whole process to make a house for their family. after that we all met up again and were given food to make lunch. each group was given something to make that was related to the country they lived in, and because we were in the slums of India we were given egg plant curry, which turned out to be really good. after lunch each group had to clean their dishes. then we were given more chores to do. our group had to go collet firewood and carry it back to the barn. with the money that we made from doing our chores we got to buy food to make dinner at the "market" where there was different people speaking different languages so it would be more of a challenge to buy the food. our group bought carrots, spaghetti, apples, and tomato sauce. all the slums decided to combine our food and make a big feast. we were able to ave enough food foe seconds, and for dessert we made oatmeal with sugar. that night was our last night at heifer. in the morning simulation was over and we were given breakfast. then that day we traveled back to little rock and went to go see little rock high school which is where the little rock nine, a group of African American student enrolled. then we went to visit the Clinton museum and after that we started our journey back to Austin
