Performance Outcome
Explain a local, regional, and/or global issue; poses a specific researchable question on this issue that requires social science investigation; and explains it's significance to the global community.
Description
In my freshman Geography class, we were asked to make a route for a highway across Africa. We had to look at conflict zones, resources, tourist attractions, disease, landforms, and other aspects to figure out what the best route was to build our highway. We first created a rejected route, which was a route that had all the things that we were trying to avoid. Then we started researching the different regions in Africa, and countries in that region. I researched economic, historical, and cultural aspects of East Africa, to become familiar with the region and what parts would be the best to include in our route and what counties/area to avoid. Then we researched physical characteristics, human characteristics, possible hazards, and economic features of six countries in East Africa. Then we started to create our route with all of our research in mind. The requirements for the route was to start in Libya and end in South Africa, we also had to go through a county that touches the east cost and then one that touches the west coast. Then we added our map of Africa with the route on it to our poster board. Next we each researched an attraction or activity to do in four on the countries that our route passes through and added it to our poster board.
Reflection
This project helped me become familiar with Africa and all the things that goes on in this continent, like the diffrent landforms, disease, bodies of water, vegetation. It helped me become more familiar with Africa because we had to stay aware of all of those things when building our route. This project was also an effective way to get us to learn about Africa because it was fun and we got to adventure into different aspects in Africa. I think that one of the most pressing issues that must be faced in order for Africa to reach a higher level of development, is disease because in every country I researched (east Africa) there was a rich risk for disease, but if other more developed countries help out and contribute in trying to reduce the amount of disease that there is in Africa to help them reach a higher level of development. So in conclusion this project helped me understand Africa and all the different parts of it.
