Description:
We first wrote five countries that we were interested in, and then put in groups where each member wrote that same country. My group was Mexico! We then had to choose a book for the whole group to read, we chose The Devil's Highway. This book was about a group of Mexican Immigrants that crossed illegally to the US, but on the way 14 died, and were named the Yuma 14. While we were reading our book we also found poems, short stories, and article related to our country. Then we chose a foreign film to watch relating to out country and analyze it. Our group chose to view Under The Same Moon, which is about a 9 year old boy and his mom. The boy lives in Mexico while his mom lives in California, the boy can't stand to be without his mom anymore and decides to illegally immigrate by himself. He experiences all the dangers of crossing the border, as well as the after math. Him and his mom eventually find each other and are reunited. After learning about Mexico it was time to make a lesson plan. We decided we were not only going to teach about the culture but also about immigration to the United States. We created a lesson plan that consisted of a power point, 3 stations, and then a fun arts and crafts activity and food from mexico, that taught the cultural side. Now it was time to teach, we went to Ohenery Middle School and taught two 7th grade classes. The lesson plan was successful, with the students being engaged and interested.
Pillar:
I put teach-for-a-day under communicate ideas because after doing research from different texts, and learning the different perspective we taught it to 7th graders. We were able to communicate and spread out ideas and open the yes of other individuals. This project helped me learn and accomplish a lot. Now I can select appropriate digital media to share insight, I learned this by researching through different texts like a novel, a film, a article, and a poem. Then we shared the insight that we learned from this to the class that we taught.
Reflection:
This project really opened my eyes on the issue of immigration, and it truly touched my heart hearing what these people have to go through. I was really invested and interested in this project, which is why it has been one of my favorite projects of sophomore year. Getting to learn more on immigration and learning different perspectives of the situation was so interesting, and I loved that at the end of the day I got to pass along the information to the group of kids I taught. It was an amazing feeling getting to teach a topic that isn't widely talked about in school and maybe changing the kids perspectives, and make an impact.
