Historical Fiction Short Story
Description:
After completing out teach-for-a-day-project we were tasked with writing a historical fiction short story. We would write about some one with their perspective in mind and life related to our country. My country was Mexico so I wrote a story about a man named Pancho who was a farm worker in Mexico. I gave details about his family, the setting, and daily life for him. Pancho ends up getting laid off from his work along with his friend Antonio. The two of them can not find jobs, and if they didn’t figure something out soon them and their families would suffer even more, with them already scraping by. They decide to hire a coyote to smuggle them across the border in the United States. Pancho has always dreamed of a better life for him and his family, and maybe this was his chance. But crossing the border comes with many dangers, which worries him and his family, hoping to get to see him again. His plan was to get a job and establish roots in the US and then come back to get his family. I added historical event in the short story as well as endnotes to give a background on the topic of immigration as well as giving some cultural background.
Pillar:
I put this under Recognize perspectives because this assignment gave me an opportunity to write from a different perspective, and see how life is in another country. I was able to write about the hardships people in Mexico face, and how life truly can be like there. Researching the historical events that happened both in Mexico and the US gave me a perspective of both sides of the situation and how reach country reacted, and how they handled certain situations. So now I can describe varying perspectives on a situation event or issue.
Reflection:
I really like this assignment because I got to explore my creative side by getting to write a story. I also got to familiarize my self with different literary devices and plot devices by including them into my story and annotating them in to the final copy. Writing this story was a way to get out of my head and create a character with a life completely different from mine and in a way connecting with them and understanding that many people face the conflicts that my character went through. Overall I really liked this assignment and I like the creativity that it brought out of me.
